Bikepacking Checklist
What do you definitely need? What materials should you really not leave at home for a successful bikepacking vacation? In this article we create a list of stuff that you should not forget. Because once you’re on your bike, there’s no way back. We trust you won’t forget your bike, and that you won’t leave without your bags. Of course, you can always forget to fasten one or two bags, so pay attention to this anyway.
We focus below on a cycling vacation in your own region, so not for a six month bikepacking trip to the other side of the world. For example, we do not include far-reaching repair gear in this list or specific nutritious food for long tough routes. The list consists of only the necessities. Of course, you can bring as much other ‘necessary’ stuff as you want, such as a camera, gopro, earbuds, books, …
Essentials
- Repair and maintenance equipment:
- Inner tube(s)
- Repair kit for tubes
- Compact multi tool
- Tire levers
- Compact bicycle hand pump
- Bike lock
- Bicycle lights and/or headlamp
- Drinking bottles
- Food/drinks for the road
- First aid kit and sunscreen
- Toiletry bag with personal hygiene products
Clothing:
- Helmet
- Bicycle clothing
- Rain gear
- Clothing for the evenings (e.g. warm but compact sweater for cold evenings)
- Cycling glasses
- Shoes for both on and off the bike
Electronics:
- GPS device or application on your smartphone (don’t forget to install the smartphone holder of course)
- Charger for smartphone and GPS
- Powerbank
Camping equipment:
- Tent
- Sleeping mat
- Sleeping bag or quilt
- Inflatable cushion
- Cooking stove
- Cooking pot
- Matches/lighter
- Pocket knife
